The UK has now moved to a fully digital immigration system. Physical documents like biometric residence permits (BRPs) have been phased out and replaced with an online record of your immigration status, known as an eVisa.

What’s changed?

The Home Office has already rolled out eVisas for many people through the UKVI system. Now, this has been extended further:

  • As of 11 March 2026, Home Office travel documents such as Refugee Travel Documents and Certificates of Travel will be automatically linked to a person's UKVI account and eVisa
  • Airlines are checking immigration status digitally before boarding
  • Physical documents are no longer issued to prove your status

Why this matters

If your eVisa record is missing information or contains errors, you could struggle to prove your status, access your rights, face delays at the airport, or be denied boarding altogether.

We are already seeing how small admin issues can have serious consequences. This system puts a lot of responsibility on people to make sure their records are correct, even when errors are not their fault.

What you need to do before you travel

Before booking or travelling, you should:

  • Log into your UKVI account: https://www.gov.uk/evisa/view-evisa-get-share-code-prove-immigration-status
  • Check that your immigration status is correct
  • Make sure your travel document is linked properly
  • Confirm that your personal details are up to date. If not, you can update them here: https://www.gov.uk/evisa/update-ukvi-account

If anything looks wrong, report it to the Home Office immediately using their error reporting form.
